Concerned in Franklin

A gun at any school, under any circumstance, causes concern for Franklin [TN] parents.One said, “I don’t like the idea of guns on campus.”

“Whenever weapons are involved we should be…
…concerned,” said another.

A third un-ironic parent who’d just been told said “I wish someone would tell parents.”

So what happened?

[Well-respected science teacher and athletics coach Kurt] Jones had the rifle on campus because he was meeting a friend to go hunting, said Public Information Officer Carole Birdsong.

Birdsong said the two met in the school parking lot and when he was transferring his gun from his car to his friend’s car, the picture was apparently taken.

Here’s the best part:

While the threat was minimal because school was not in session, Birdsong said the teacher“made a mistake” and “you’re not supposed to bring a gun on campus, we all know that.”

“The threat was minimal because school was not in session.”  Because when a teacher with a gun sees children he starts shooting?  With some of the kids I’ve met I wouldn’t blame him but come on.  Come on.  You really think there was some, even minimal, “threat”?

This guy surely broke some law, we all do - every morning I commit a (21 times more powerful than CO2) methane crime - but the reaction of these parents is is silly and ignorant.  The school’s reaction was more reasonable but still silly.

At the last minute, the school had to cut the photo out of every single yearbook.

The teacher, helped yearbook staff members cut the photo out of more than 1,000 yearbooks.

Birdsong said Jones was verbally reprimanded for the incident and upset the photo ever got into the yearbook.

    this is possibly the stupidest thing I’ve seen (well this week at least). though apparently we’re not the only ones who feel that way. the ‘reporter’ is aparently getting an ear full on his own blog, here;

    …apparently too much of an earful. I can’t see any publicly visible comments at that URL.
