Assault rifles are no longer illegal in the United States.

Assault rifles were never illegal. True, select fire, fully-automatic-operation capable assault rifles are heavily regulated, require a $200 transfer tax, an extensive background check and permission of your chief local law enforcement officer, state law permitting. What you mean is the made up term “Assault Weapon”, based on cosmetic features only.

Who in the world needs an automatic weapon or assault rifle?

There you go again, using terms you do not understand. The “Assault Weapons” that were banned in the Clinton years are not “automatics”, they are semi-automatics. Clinton did not ban assault rifles.

And what in the world does “need” have to do with it. In a free country, I should be allowed anything I want as long as I don’t harm others. All you “need” is air water, food and shelter.

What are you going to do with that?

How about formal and informal competition, hunting, pest control and recreation for starters.

The only use of these in the country have been in mass shootings or robbings.

So why are they legal?

Why not? Everything you’ve said about them is wrong so how can you expect me to take this question seriously?

Why has Congress been unable to put the law back into effect?

Because it’s political suicide and they know it. Besides, the “Assault Weapon” ban had no effect on crime, the whole rational of the ban.
