We Must Disarm This Source of Illegal Guns

Criminals are going after cops — for their guns.
In the past year, gang members, thieves and drug dealers in Palm Beach County have broken into at least six police cars and stolen handguns and shotguns, officials say.
…
Despite the risk, criminals are hitting police cruisers in South Florida and across the country for a reason: Most police cars are mini-armories on wheels. Cars store not only high-powered guns but also bullet-resistant jackets, “stop sticks” to pierce tires of fleeing cars and other devices to combat the firepower of dangerous career criminals.
Shockingly, none of these weapons serve a sporting use. “Those vehicles are rolling gun shows - it’s the police car loophole” some say. Until we plug this flow of illegal arms, The Childrenâ„¢ can never be safe.

Because of complaining citizens, the parking of police vehicles (where the officers can keep them under observation) in no parking zones, bus stops, etc. has been prohibited by every department I am aware of. When I started with Detroit PD in 1970 we parked our vehicles where we could see them while in restaurants (we need to eat too, you know!). But while on a call, be it for a heart attack, man with a gun, etc. they couldn’t always be parked in a visable location. Back then, it was the Black Panthers and other radical groups we had to worry about, not gangs. They would drop incindiarys in gas tank and other fun stuff. I moved on to Troy PD (where I retired from) and we had 1 incident where an unmarked police vehicle was broken into by a neighbor of the officer (it was parked in the officers drive) and a shotgun taken. It was recovered without anyone being injured, but this happened to be a Suburban white punk, no gang associations, only cocaine addiction. More guns are stolen from residents. Police Officers, in order to protect you, MUST be able to protect themselves. All the equipment carried is there to help protect you. Who’s the bone head that came up with the theory voiced here?
If you are writing of the theory of disarming police (and their vehicles), I sir am that bonehead.
I write for myself and for many who know me. Most can tell that this is tongue in cheek. In fact I tagged it “TFIC” for “tongue firmly in cheek”. Of course I have other readers, my hope is that, in context, they could tell too.
I have no desire to disarm those who would not disarm me. However, there are many who would disarm me on the off chance that my arms might be stolen and used in further crimes. This was written to point out the ridiculousness of that idea. This case shows that even if all law abiding citizens were disarmed criminals could still acquire arms from government employees.
I hope any misunderstanding has been cleared up.
- Bonehead.
Even if it hadn’t been tongue in cheek, it wouldn’t work.
In the UK, even most police officers are prohibited from carrying firearms and still criminals have theirs.
But an article like this is a good way of reminding everybody that police officers are only humans after all, and they too can be victims of theft.
Of course it wouldn’t work, just as the same efforts aimed at citizens don’t work. As you point out it doesn’t even work on an island.
Gun bans work about as well as banning cocaine and heroin.
